Barbara Favola

“A critical goal of policies guiding growth in a community should be to honor the values that a community holds dear. I have always celebrated Arlington’s diversity and pledged to the community a commitment to house residents from all income brackets. I totally believe in the value of affordable housing and have committed a large portion of my time and energy to accomplishing this goal.”

Barbara Favola is a passionate leader for government transparency, fairness and equal treatment for all citizens, and increased trust. As former Chairwoman and current Vice Chairwoman of the Arlington County Board, she is committed to ensuring that all Arlington County residents have equal opportunity to housing and to share the benefits of Smart Growth. Barbara knows that local government plays an important role in addressing injustice. She has shaped model policies and appropriated local resources to improve pre-K education, elder care, services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and environmental initiatives.Barbara is devoted to ending her community’s affordable housing crisis. This is why she is currently engaged in an important effort to construct the Clarendon Baptist Church Affordable Housing Project in Arlington’s Lyon Village neighborhood. Despite intense resistance by some opponents to the Clarendon Project, Barbara has not given up. She knows that meeting the needs of hard working families is more important than political expediency.Due to the courageous leadership of Barbara, thousands of elderly Northern Virginians will have clean, safe, and affordable housing. As Chairwoman of the Arlington County Board, she personally lobbied the governor to allocate $1.7 million dollars to renovate the Arlington Assisted Living Facility. In addition to the state of Virginia, Arlington County has committed to funding this facility, so that seniors with limited incomes and serious mental or physical disabilities will have comprehensive care.

21st Century Democrats also applauds Barbara’s promotion of environmentally sustainable economic growth. Spurring development and creating jobs for the people of Arlington is a top priority for Barbara because, unlike many politicians, she knows a strong economy and a clean environment are necessarily inner-connected. She will make cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay a priority through focused comprehensive storm water management program that ensures improvements to the quality of the water that ultimately empties into the Chesapeake. A small investment now will pay dividends for generations to come.

21st Century Democrats is pleased to announce its endorsement of Barbara Favola for the Arlington County Board. She is firmly committed to implementing progressive policies which improves the lives of all Northern Virginians. Throughout her 11-year tenure on the Arlington County Board, Barbara Favola has distinguished herself as a champion of middle and low income families. Her track record on issues like sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and housing policy speaks for itself. We are excited to be working with such an impressive public servant and are confident she will continue to improve Arlington County.
