Betsy Markey

“America can still be the land of opportunity if we elect leaders who are willing to engage, encourage, and empower the people in our communities. I am running for Congress because I care deeply about the future of this country.”
Betsy Markey believes that America’s biggest opportunities and challenges must be faced head on. Commonsense and fairness are at the heart of her governing philosophy and she is a strong believer rigorous debate and including a wide range of viewpoints. She is determined to work for the greater good and is clearly the best choice to represent Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.

After studying and working in Washington, D.C. in the early 1980s, Markey and her husband started a computer business out of their home. By 1996 their company, Syscom Services Inc., had grown into a profitable, publicly traded corporation. Understanding the importance of gender equity within her corporation, Markey battled her company’s board to ensure that Syscom granted a reasonable maternity leave to its female employees. More recently, Markey was Senator Ken Salazar’s Regional Director for the North and Central Plains region. In this leadership position, she worked closely with agricultural groups, businesses, non-profits, elected leaders, veterans, and individual constituents to best represent their interests.

Through her work in both the private sector and public service, Markey has gained the experience needed to represent Colorado’s 4th District in Congress. She envisions a society with opportunity for all and will fight to protect working families from unfair taxes and skyrocketing health care costs. She believes that the cost of health care is crushing small businesses and weighing down our economy. When seventy-five percent of health care costs are attributable to conditions such as heart disease, asthma, and cancer, Markey is determined to reduce these costs by focusing on disease prevention and health education. She will work to provide health care to all Americans, and do it in a way that is efficient and equitable.

Markey is also a strong advocate for expanding and promoting the Earned Income Tax Credit, as well as protecting the middle class from the alternate minimum tax. She believes we must fix our unemployment insurance system and low-income aid programs, some of which are more than 30 years old. Markey believes we need to build an economy that works for even those with the least among us.

Betsy Markey has shown the ability to lead in a variety of capacities throughout her career. 21st Century Democrats knows that she will be a strong voice for working Coloradans and a great addition to an increasingly progressive Congressional Delegation from Colorado. We are confident that she will be the kind of representative the people of Colorado’s 4th district deserve.
