Donna Edwards

“I felt strongly that someone needed to run who would represent a district that cares deeply about our families, our community, and the direction of our country. I want to work to ensure that our district is one where my son, when he graduates from college, will want to come back to.”
Congresswoman Donna Edwards is a passionate and progressive woman. She is fiercely committed to the issues directly affecting her constituents from Maryland’s 4th Congressional District. Congresswoman Edwards has been a lifelong leader in protecting women from violence, protecting our fragile environment, and strengthening families through universal access to healthcare. She refuses to accept the status quo that allows those in power to reap all the benefits, while taking advantage of the powerless.

Edwards’ passion and initiative is evident in her work with domestic violence victims. She has served as the co-founder and first executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence and received nation-wide recognition in the 1990s when she led the struggle to pass the Violence Against Women Act of 1994, which provides comprehensive funding to shelter and services for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Donna is also passionate about the well being of her constituents’ health and homes. Nationally she has been successful in an effort to force pharmaceutical companies to open markets for generic anti-arthritis medications. In her own community, she led a triumphant grassroots campaign against a multi-billion dollar plan to renovate the harbor in Prince George’s County, which she felt was inadequate. Her efforts led to a change in the plan that brought over $200 million into the community and kept the local air, water, land, and wildlife safe.

Unafraid of pushing for change, she challenged veteran Maryland Democrat Al Wynn. His record of voting with Republicans on issues such as the war in Iraq, drilling for oil in Alaska’s protected land and giving enormous tax breaks to oil and gas companies convinced Donna that it was time for him to face a true challenge. Her victory over Congressman Wynn in the February Primary led to his resignation in the spring. Following her victory in the Special Election, she was sworn in as the first African-American Congresswoman from Maryland on June 19th, 2008. Congresswoman Edwards is now focused on the General Election to secure a full term in the House of Representatives.

Congresswoman Edwards is a deeply patriotic citizen who believes that with leadership guided by progressive values, the United States will regains its position as moral leader in the world. She is convinced that government works best when it works for the common good. Congresswoman Edwards has hit the ground running and has already cast significant votes to bring an end to the Iraq War, support our veterans when they return home, to stop the government’s intrusion on the personal lives of law abiding Americans and to extend family and medical leave benefits for federal employees.

21st Century Democrats is thrilled to endorse a Donna Edwards for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District because she is deeply committed to social justice and equality for all.
