Jon Powers

“I believe that we have the power to tackle our nation’s great problems and together we have the power to change Washington.”

Jon Powers went to war as a soldier. He came back on a mission. As many of us read newspapers and watched television reports about the devastating war in Iraq, Captain Powers, a Clarence native, was in Baghdad serving our country. He served as an artillery platoon leader in the Army’s 1st Division and later as the Battalion Commander’s Adjutant in Baghdad and Najaf. Captain Powers’ superior officers characterized him as a soldier with “extraordinary management skills, leadership, and unmatched talent to accomplish the most difficult task with minimal guidance.” His experience and leadership ability, as well as dedication to the American people, make Jon Powers an ideal choice to represent New York’s 26th Congressional District.

After completing his service, Captain Powers returned home to Western New York with plans to be a full time social studies teacher. But his experience in Iraq was life-altering and he could not forget the firsthand devastation and lost opportunities that stemmed from the Bush administration’s mismanagement of American foreign policy. Determined to lead by example and draw attention to the destruction in the Middle East, Captain Powers came back to the States driven to give a voice to those in Iraq who were most neglected—the children. Recognizing that many children in Iraq had been exposed to war their entire lives, Captain Powers founded a nonprofit organization which aimed to provide Iraqi youth with the education and resources they need to dissuade their involvement in radical and terrorists groups. They became the leading voice on Iraqi youth and counterterrorism in Washington bringing attention to matter by appearing on the cover of Newsweek in and being featured on NBC Nightly News’ “Making a Difference” series.

As a war veteran and founder of a nonprofit, Captain Powers has proven that he is an effective leader who puts problem solving above anything else. He knows that Americans deserve a better path and positive leadership. He understands that people are worried about their jobs, their health insurance, and the safety of our troops. And he is determined to providing Western New Yorkers with real leadership and real change in Washington.

Jon Powers will work to establish an America that is safe, healthy, and prosperous. Once in office, he will push to re-focus national security efforts and enhance programs for development, education, and diplomacy. And with the value for public service as his life’s calling, Powers will also work with our country’s leaders to re-engage America’s youth by issuing a call to national service. By instituting a national service program and encouraging young adults to join programs like the Peace Corps, Job Corps, AmeriCorps, and our Armed Services, he believes we can instill great American values in future generations. As a former schoolteacher, Captain Powers knows firsthand the importance of improving education in America. He believes that a well educated workforce is essential to securing our nation and is determined to provide America’s children with quality schooling and affordable access to higher education.

Once elected to Congress, Jon Powers will demonstrate the positive and principled leadership our country needs. 21st Century Democrats is confident that Captain Powers’ ability to lead by example will inspire other America to do the same and move our country forward.
