Kate Brown

“Throughout my career, both in the legislature and as a family and juvenile law attorney, I have been motivated by a sense of fairness and social justice. These are the values that will move this country towards full equality, whether it is securing equal rights, creating pay equity or ensuring that every person has access to health care.”

Kate Brown is the type of candidate we dream about at Twenty-First Century Democrats. She is a strong progressive leader who has championed equality and fairness in our government and consistently produced the kind of positive change that our nation desperately needs.

Kate has served in the Oregon State Legislature since 1991 and was elected Senate Democratic Leader in 1998. While in the minority, Kate and her fellow Democrats fought to protect programs that serve Oregon’s neediest citizens from Republican cuts during a budget crisis in the state. Under her guidance, Senate Democrats were able to gain the majority in 2005 and Kate was elected to serve as Oregon’s first female Senate Majority Leader.

Twenty-First Century Democrats shares Kate belief that an informed and engaged voting public is essential to good government. She is committed to improving the transparency of the election process in her state and increasing voter participation, especially among young people. In 2005, she drafted and passed landmark legislation to change Oregon’s campaign finance reporting guidelines and help voters see how money is influencing their government. The new system is easily accessible to the public and requires both candidates and ballot measure campaigns to report all contributions and expenditures on a rolling basis. As Oregon’s next Secretary of State, Kate will continue to improve the transparency and accountability of the election system.

Kate believes that access to health care is a basic human right. She is a firm supporter of universal health care and thinks that a just and fair society ought to provide this basic necessity to all its people. She argues that we need to move away from a system that waits until someone is in urgent need of care to provide it, to a system that values and invests in preventative and early-life care. Kate believes that by providing better heath care services to kids when they are young we can teach them to live healthier lifestyles, which will help create a healthier society overall and mediate our health care crisis.

A longtime legislator, Kate is dedicated to making government work more effectively. She is a strong advocate of utilizing performance audits to evaluate how state agencies are functioning, recognize where there are opportunities for growth and identify significant challenges. Kate wants to use this development tool to improve the efficiency of state agencies and ensure that tax payer dollars are used effectively.

Twenty-First Century Democrats is excited to be working with the Brown campaign as they fight for all Oregonians. Kate is an excellent candidate and we are confident that she will continue the important work she began in the State Legislature as Oregon’s next Secretary of State.
