Mary Jo Kilroy

“I envision an America where our government supports sustainable, livable, communities where people can live, work, play and raise a family.”
Mary Jo Kilroy’s vision of America includes investing in good paying “green collar” jobs in renewable energy and environmental protection, universal pre-school and K-12 quality public schools, scientific research to cure diseases, public transportation, and strong protection of America’s natural resources. These investments, made possible by a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and a reallocation of resources, will lead to renewed admiration of America across the world for its commitment to peace and environmental sustainability.

Kilroy began her public service as a community organizer and VISTA Volunteer. Fighting for fairness and equality in school funding eventually led her to run for the Columbus School Board. As a member of the School Board, Kilroy helped enact policies that discouraged violence and discrimination and promoted equal opportunities for all students. She passionately believes that “every child should have the opportunity for an education that she or he aspires to, from pre-school to graduate school.”

After being elected to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, Kilroy managed a $1.2 billion budget and implemented a variety of programs that improved the lives of more than one million Ohioans. From finding a steady source of funding homeless shelters to helping create the Franklin County/City of Columbus Housing Trust, she helped create housing programs that have become a national model. She helped to create and fund Access Health Columbus to provide health care for uninsured, low-income families while also encouraging more employers offer insurance in the first place. And she worked to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases by switching the county bus fleet to bio-diesel and creating a natural gas and E 85 station for county vehicles.

Kilroy also created a model for providing jobs with livable wages. She worked diligently to provide a living wage for county workers and led her colleagues in implementing the Quality Contractor Policy which limits county contracts to businesses that pay a living wage and offer health care benefits to their employees. The policy also rewards bidders that utilize apprenticeship programs, provide pension plans and have abided by the fair labor standards act.

We are committed to helping Mary Jo Kilroy fight for Ohio’s working families, and we are confident that as a Member of Congress she will successfully bring about the kind of positive change that central Ohio desperately needs.
