Rich Cordray

“Leadership requires an understanding, curiosity, and the will to exert pressure for change.”

Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray has spent his adult life working to improve the lives of others. Whether he was teaching law students at Ohio State, arguing a case before the US Supreme Court, or representing his constituents as an elected official, Richard Cordray’s work has always served causes greater than himself.

Treasurer Cordray was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended local public schools. He received his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State before earning a master’s in economics at Oxford University and a law degree from the University of Chicago. After law school, he clerked for US Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and Byron White and would later argue several cases before the court. Treasurer Cordray eventually returned to Columbus where he taught at Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law for 15 years and worked in private practice.

Treasurer Cordray was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1990 and served one term before going to work in the Attorney General’s office as Ohio’s first State Solicitor. In 2002, he was elected Franklin County Treasurer. There he fought tirelessly to reform the county’s tax laws, prevent foreclosures and restore fiscal responsibility. Under his leadership, Franklin County drastically improved its financial situation and was the only county in Ohio with an AAA bond rating. In 2005, Treasurer Cordray was named the national “County Leader of the Year” by American City & County magazine in recognition of his compassionate and innovative tax solutions for Ohio families.

In 2006, Cordray was elected Ohio Treasurer and quickly adapted his successful approach in Franklin County to the state level. He has worked diligently to “safeguard taxpayer funds, restore public trust in state government, and promote financial security for Ohioans.” Immediately upon his election, Treasurer Cordray revitalized the GrowNOW program to help provide low-cost funding to small businesses that keep jobs in Ohio’s struggling communities. He was named the 2008 Financial Services Champion of the Year for the Midwest Region by the US Small Business Administration for his work on the issue. Finally, Treasurer Cordray organized more than 50 Save Our Homes county task forces to coordinate the efforts of government, non-profits, charitable organizations and the private sector to stem the tide of foreclosures in the state.

Treasurer Cordray is committed to making life better for all Ohioans. He has been a competent and effective public servant throughout his career and is ready to confront the tough challenges that lie ahead. 21st Century Democrats is proud to endorse Richard Cordray and we are confident that he will continue to produce extraordinary results as Ohio’s next Attorney General.
