Steve Driehaus

“My vision for my community and my country is an engaged citizenry, a citizenry that understands the interdependent nature of our lives. This translates into individuals who do not only live for themselves and for their own success, but who have a deep appreciation of what it means to serve and what it means to be engaged in the broader community.”
Steve Driehaus’ father inspired his young son to pursue public service because it makes the world a better place. After years in public service, Steve is concerned that today we are “bowling alone” and have stopped caring about our neighbors. When the social fabric begins to fray and people turn inward, concerned only about what they can get and not about what they can give, the first to suffer are the least among us. Steve rejects that vision of America. He envisions an engaged citizenry, a citizenry that understands we are all connected. Steve’s life has been an example of bringing people together and working for the common good.

As Minority Whip of the Ohio House of Representatives, Steve is a leading voice in Ohio for ensuring that all benefit from our united effort. Continuing his long history of public service, he is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Ohio’s 1st District. Steve is an asset to progressive politics in Ohio and has been recognized as one of Ohio’s political rising stars on the Cincy Business Magazine Power 100 list, as well as “Legislator of the Year” by both the Ohio Association of Election Officials and the ARC of Ohio. Elected to the Ohio State House of Representative in 2000, Driehaus has fought to expand health care coverage and led the charge against predatory lending and foreclosures in Hamilton County. Today, Steve is running for the US House of Representatives in Ohio because he believes that communities in Cincinnati need the strong leadership that he provides. He is determined to get our economy back on track and keep the interest of Ohioans and the American people ahead of special interests in Washington.

Upon election, Steve will work diligently to restore fiscal responsibility, fight for middle class tax cuts, and restore common sense budgeting that puts the needs of middle class families first. In the Ohio State Legislature, he has become an authority on economic and fiscal issues which affect middle class families. He opposed former Governor Bob Taft’s sales tax increase and advocated for tax cuts for seniors. As minority whip, he was instrumental in the Democrats gaining seven seats in the Ohio House of Representatives, bringing the party within four seats of a majority.

As a legislator, community organizer, and a volunteer in the Peace Corps in West Africa, Steve envisions America as a place where all citizens are committed to national service. All citizens would be engaged with the diverse fabric of American society and truly appreciate being part of a broader community. He will push to increase funding for programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps so that they can effectively sustain a growing number of participants.

Steve has worked as a community organizer, as Executive Director, and Senior Associate at the Community Building Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. In these capacities, he has worked to support economic development plans, facilitated neighborhood planning, and collaborated closely with community leaders to ensure that everyone benefits from development.

Inspired by his life changing experiences in the Peace Corp, Steve is a devoted public servant who knows that through service, we, as Americans, can achieve a better tomorrow. 21st Century Democrats is excited to support Steve in his challenge for 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives and are convinced that this move to the federal level will give him the opportunity to continue to improve communities in Ohio and throughout America.
