Ty Cobb

“My vision for the state of Tennessee and America is that it is a place where there is true accountability in public safety and public welfare particularly when it comes to public disasters. We need to ensure that government is truly behind hard working people when their lives are destroyed by natural disasters whether the disaster it is a flood, tornado, or a hurricane.”
Although he is not the baseball legend, Ty Cobb is a progressive voice in central Tennessee who stands firmly on his commitment to duty, trust and integrity. Ty’s sense of duty runs deep and motivated him to become a firefighter and to seek office as a Maury County Commissioner. He embraces the public’s trust as he strives to keep the fiscal house in order through his leadership on the Budget Committee. Ty displayed his integrity in working successfully with community leaders and General Motors to preserve the historical battlefield of Spring Hill against encroaching development. In 2005, the US Census named the City of Spring Hill as the 15th fastest growing community, and Ty believes that all families should benefit from the increased growth without giving up their cherished quality of life. And during a time of such rapid growth, he knows that people are concerned about keeping their homes and will therefore ensure that the current tax rate in his district is maintained. Ty also values the role that government can play in helping Tennesseans recover from natural disasters by providing appropriate resources in a timely manner to support the efforts of local leaders and citizens working to restore order and a sense of safety back to the community.

As a member of the Columbia Fire Department and the President of the International Association of Firefighter (IAFF) Columbia Local 4381, Ty knows first hand how important policemen, firefighters, and medical responders are to the safety and well-being of communities. Once in office, without increasing the tax burden on Tennessee’s working class families, Ty will work to increase funding for these first responders. He believes that particularly in Tennessee’s rural areas, these heroes are often neglected the resources they need to successfully do their job. Ty knows that if funding is increased in these areas, communities will be better protected, and citizens will be safer.

Also, Ty’s priorities include a greater investment in public education. Once elected, he will be an advocate for the building of more schools in rural Tennessee and ensure that local districts have the funding they need to build schools that will enhance the lives of Tennessee’s children well into the future. Ty will guarantee that regardless of where you may live in Tennessee—rural or urban—education is consistently high quality.

At the age of 27, Ty was elected to the position of Maury County Commissioner where he fought to preserve a historic battlefield under threat from developers, and he found a way to generate funding for a needed fire station. In addition to holding public office, Ty serves his community as a firefighter. He was one of a select number of individuals selected to participate in the International Association of Firefighters political training.

Ty is running for the Tennessee State House because of his sense of duty and his desire to serve others. As a state representative, he will be a leader who strives to keep constituents engaged in the political process through clear communications and an open-door policy. Ty believes in progressive values and that this country must elect officials like himself who best represent the needs of Americans and are committed to providing equality for all.

Cobb says, “I believe the goal of every elected official should be to work together with every citizen to move our community and nation forward, a shared vision that produces positives results. We (Democrats) prove this everyday by representing all levels of society regardless of race, age, color, or wealth. When we look back on the past, the Democratic Party has shaped this great nation into the one we live in today. Let us stand up…today…and make a difference for tomorrow.”

21st Century Democrats is proud to endorse Ty Cobb, a firefighter who will always answer the call to serve the citizens of Tennessee’s 64th State Representative District.
