Dan Maffei

Race Outcome – Won:

Missourian Todd Akin’s views on “legitimate rape” took center stage in the New York 24th District rematch between Tea Party Republican Ann Marie Buerkle and challenger Dan Maffei.

Maffei released an ad about Buerkle cosponsoring a bill with Representative Todd Akin that would redefine the term “rape” to mean only “forcible rape,” which Akin also calls “legitimate rape.”

Maffei’s campaign says women who were were drugged or even minors who were victims of statutory rape would not be classified as rape victims, and they would lose access to federal funds to terminate pregnancies that were a result of rape.  That is a significant change from existing federal law that allows the use of federal funds to terminate any pregnancy that is the result of rape.

Highlighting Buerkle’s extremist Tea Party positions is working for Maffei, who is gaining ground in this tight race.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Cosponsored the Uniting American Families Act, which fights immigration laws that discriminate against same-sex couples
  • Voted to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
  • Voted for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act
  • Says education should be high on the list of government priorities
  • Worked for Democratic Senators Bill Bradley and Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Why We Like Him
: During the 111th Congress, Maffei cosponsored the Prevention First Act, which was designed to decrease the number of unintended pregnancies by expanding access to preventive health care and education services. He also cosponsored a number of other bills designed to improve access to quality health care for women in our country and those around the world as well.

Candidate Quote: “First of all, there has to be a bigger federal commitment. We sit here and talk about how we want the country to be first in the world, our students deserve the best, et cetera. And then, as a country, we believe education is to be funded by the smallest possible entity — these school districts.”
