Rick Nolan

Race Outcome – Won:

When Rick Nolan represented Minnesota’s 6th District for three terms, former Representative Jim Oberstar called him “the conscience of the Congress.”

While the 6th District is now represented by ultra-conservative Michelle Bachmann, Nolan is challenging first-term Tea Party Republican Chip Cravaack in Minnesota’s new 8th District.

In its endorsement of Nolan, the Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party cited Cravaack for “his votes to end Medicare as we know it, slash financial aid for students, and allow insurance companies to once again deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions, all in order to give more tax breaks to his ultra-wealthy corporate friends.”

Progressive Credentials:

  • Advocates a single-payer health-care plan, public campaign financing, more rigid gun control laws and immediately removing U.S. troops from Afghanistan
  • Calls for reducing the Department of Defense budget
  • Backed by Minnesota Democrats Governor Mark Dayton,  Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Al Franken and former Vice President Walter Mondale

Why We Like Him
: Nolan wants to take back the 8th for progressive values and continue his advocacy for working families, farmers, small businesses and rural communities.  A successful small-business owner, Nolan raises money for college scholarships.  Born and raised in the 8th District, Nolan harvests wild rice in the fall and boils maple syrup in spring.

Candidate Quote: “Contrary to what some argue, the stimulus did some good,” Nolan said. “Not fast enough, not good enough, but a pretty dramatic improvement. I have friends in the construction industry, and the stimulus has greatly helped their business.”
