Mark Udall

Eight months from Election Day, the Koch brothers launched a $1 million attack ad campaign against Senator Mark Udall in an initial round of ads focused on Udall’s support of the Affordable Care Act.

According to the Washington Post, the Americans for Prosperity ads are part of the Koch brothers’ larger multimillion-dollar campaign to repeal Obamacare.  After its troubled rollout, Udall’s poll numbers weakened in Colorado, a swing state.

Recent polls have Udall only 1 to 2 points ahead of his GOP opponent, Rep. Cory Gardner, a Tea Party hero.

Gardner’s extremist agenda includes criminalizing abortion and some types of birth control.  He supported passage of a proposed Personhood Amendment to the Colorado Constitution, which would outlaw abortion in cases of rape, incest and when the mother’s health is in danger.

Gardner has voted 40 times to repeal Obamacare.  In August 2013, Gardner posted on his Facebook page: “Obamacare needs to go. I have voted to repeal Obamacare in its entirety, dismantle it, and to defund it in the nearly 40 pieces of legislation that have come before the House. I am also a cosponsor of H.R. 2682, the Defund Obamacare Act, sponsored by Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA) stating that no Federal funds shall be made available to carry out any provisions of Obamacare. Senator Ted Cruz is leading the same bill on the Senate side.”

Gardner voted for the Cut, Cap and Balance Act in July 2011, which CNN reported “would impose strict caps on all future federal spending while making it significantly tougher to raise taxes — the solution favored by hard-line conservatives.”

Progressive Credentials:  Udall leads a bipartisan effort to rein in the NSA’s domestic surveillance programs, protect privacy rights and ensure intelligence agencies are held accountable.

Consistently pro-choice throughout his career, Udall’s priority issues include securing equal pay for equal work, getting government out of women’s private health care decisions, ending violence against women and combating sexual assault in our military and society as a whole.

Udall is a leading advocate of strengthening campaign finance laws and bringing greater transparency to elections.  He championed legislation to reform and strengthen the presidential public financing system to ensure that candidates are focused on courting voters, not big donors.

Why We Like Him:  Before turning to public service, Udall ran a successful nonprofit, Colorado Outward Bound, where he combined his business acumen with a love for Colorado’s mountains.  An experienced outdoorsman and mountain climber, he has climbed many of the toughest mountains in the world, including all of Colorado’s “Fourteeners.”

Mark is part of the Udall family political dynasty, which includes his father Morris King “Mo” Udall, the former representative and former presidential candidate; his uncle Stewart L. Udall, the former secretary of the interior; and his cousin Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico.  Stewart and Mo led the creation of the modern conservation movement and were key players in the Kennedy-Johnson era.

Candidate Quote:  “I was encouraged when the White House recently heeded my long-standing call to affirm that the bulk collection of Americans’ phone records cannot be allowed to continue and that the president is committed to declassifying the Senate Intelligence Committee’s detention and interrogation study.  I will continue to push the administration to not only affirm that the CIA overstepped its bounds, but also to take a look at the agency’s leadership to ensure that those who operate its highest levels indeed have an unshakable respect for our founding principles.”
