Staci Appel

Republican Tom Latham retiring has left Iowa’s 3rd District as a toss-up, making it a critical seat for Democrats to pick up.

The Democratic nominee is Staci Appel, who was elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2006 and has been fighting for middle-class families, farmers and small-business owners ever since.

Appel’s top issues include raising the minimum wage, closing loopholes for corporations that ship jobs overseas, pushing back against the extremists attacking affordable health care for all, funding Head Start, protecting SNAP benefits, ensuring that college loans are affordable, and protecting Social Security and Medicare.

Progressive Credentials:  A DCCC Jumpstart candidate and part of its “Red to Blue” initiative, Appel has endorsements from AFSCME Council 61, the Great Plains Laborers District Council, EMILY’s List and Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Why We Like Her:  Iowa is one of four states that has never sent a woman to either the U.S. Senate or House. But that hasn’t affected Appel’s core campaign issues, which include equal pay for equal work, protecting a woman’s right to choose, and something she calls “mom common sense” values.

Candidate Quote:  “Washington needs what we all have, something I call ‘mom common sense’ and ‘Iowa common sense,’ and that is exactly what I am going to bring to Washington, because my only agenda is to make life better for Iowa families, and that starts with raising the minimum wage.  Too many families are working hard and still struggling to make ends meet.  My first vote when I came here to serve in the state senate was raising the minimum wage to $7.25.  That was 7 years ago, and Iowans need a raise. I think it is about time.  So I am proud to support Senator Harkin’s bill to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.”
