Ted Strickland

“This is our country, our Senate, our fight – for higher wages, for fair trade, for education and opportunity for all.”

That’s why Ted Strickland decided to run for the U.S. Senate. He says he wants to save the American Dream by going back to the basics.

In the race to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate, initial polling gives Strickland a good edge, with 48 percent supporting Strickland over incumbent Republican Rob Portman at 39 percent.

However, Portman is near the top of the money list when it comes to senators up for reelection. Raising nearly $3 million in the first quarter of 2015, Portman’s campaign war chest holds around $8 million.

Beginning his campaign in March 2015, Strickland doesn’t have that financial base. But as a former Ohio governor and U.S. Representative, he knows what it takes to run a successful campaign in the state.

Progressive Credentials: As an elected official, Strickland’s track record includes:

  • Passing a bill requiring 25 percent of energy sold in Ohio comes from renewable or advanced energy by 2025;
  • Passing a budget that included providing health insurance coverage to every child in Ohio;
  • Passing a budget with the largest expenditure for K-12 education since 1980;
  • Backing campaign finance reform that would ban soft money contributions and issue ads; and,
  • Supporting programs designed to put the unemployed back to work.

After serving as governor of Ohio, Strickland was nominated by President Obama to be a public delegate to the 68th U.N. General Assembly. He also served as a senior adviser to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

Most recently, he ran the Center for American Progress Action Fund, where he advocated for policies to strengthen America’s working families.

Why We Like Him: As governor, Ted Strickland put in place an expansive stimulus package to create jobs and rebuild communities hit hard by the recession.  He consistently made assisting those most in need a high priority.

One of nine children, and the only one to go to college, he says that the struggles of working people wasn’t a subject he had to read about in a book.  He says that he believes in the American Dream because he has lived it. And he has never forgotten his roots.

Candidate Quote: “I’m honored to have the support of 21st Century Democrats. Together, we can ensure that we emerge from this global economic recession stronger than ever by working for new jobs, affordable higher education and quality health care for all our citizens.”
