Murray Introduces Middle-Class Tax Cut Bills

Challenging Republicans to join Democrats in cutting taxes for working families, not just the few wealthiest Americans, Senator Patty Murray introduced two bills to cut taxes for the middle class.

“Wages for middle-class families have been flat even as costs like child care have been rising,” said Murray.

“While Republicans continue to call for more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations, I’m proud to introduce middle-class tax cuts that will reward families for their hard work, deliver them some much-needed help to pay their bills, and help the economy grow from the middle out, not the top down.”

Murray’s 21st Century Worker Tax Cut Act creates a new tax credit worth up to $1,000 for families with two working parents, aimed at helping with child-care and transportation costs. Murray projects the changes would benefit more than 7 million two-earner families.

Also aimed at helping families keep up with the rising costs of child care, the Helping Working Families Afford Child Care Act would reform the child and dependent care tax credit by raising its limits and making it refundable, so low-income families could benefit as well. The typical credit increase would go from $600 to $2,800 for most low- and middle-income families.

The Washington senator joined other Democrats in supporting a package of tax-cut bills to help working families, with a focus on college and child-care costs:

  • American Opportunity Tax Credit: Expand to enable families to offset the increasing cost of college tuition by growing the savings they can receive per student through the tax credit. For every dollar a family spends on college tuition, they could get a dollar off their taxes, up to $3,000.
  • Working Families Tax Relief Act: Expand and extend the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, making the 2009 expansion of both tax credits permanent. It would also expand the EITC to include workers without children.

Murray’s focus on working families also includes increasing the minimum wage to give millions of workers a raise.
