Rick Nolan

Having won his last election by a razor-thin margin, Republican funders have already started targeting Rick Nolan in his 2016 reelection bid. Nolan reports that Republicans made a huge buy of attack ads against him in August, more than a year out from Election Day.

While Nolan’s campaign for 2016 has started early to answer those attacks, he is still focused on advancing his priorities in Congress. Nolan is working to protect Social Security and Medicare, restore the Voting Rights Act, stop partisan-driven redistricting, and end Citizens United and the dark money taking over our elections.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Advocated for a single-payer health-care plan, public campaign financing, more rigid gun control laws and immediately removing U.S. troops from Afghanistan
  • Called for reducing the Department of Defense budget
  • Backed by Minnesota Democrats Governor Mark Dayton,  Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Al Franken and former Vice President Walter Mondale

Why We Like Him: Since taking back the 8th District from a Tea Party Republican in 2014, Nolan has continued his advocacy for working families, farmers, small businesses and rural communities.

Candidate Quote: “Today, U.S. corporations are sitting on trillions of dollars in cash. We are witnessing the accumulation of wealth in this country that is unparalleled anywhere in the history of this country or in the world. Republicans say, ‘Well, we need to give them more tax breaks.’ As the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and the middle class gets decimated, their response to everything is to give more tax breaks to the rich and to the powerful. Well, they are sitting on trillions of dollars of cash. Many of them have paid little or no taxes whatsoever, so giving them another tax break does little or nothing to change their financial position. Their problem is they don’t have markets for their products. And why don’t they have a market for their product in this country? Because the middle class does not have the money, and that is what it is all about. We have to restore the middle class in this country. And how do we do that? We start by reordering national priorities. We start rebuilding the infrastructure of this country, the roads, the bridges, the water and the sewer. We start building mass transit. We start building rapid rail transit among our cities around this country. That will provide jobs, good jobs, well-paying jobs. And with that will follow the kind of income security and assets that people need to be comfortable to be able to go out into the market and start buying and improving the lives of their families and their community.”
