John Sarbanes

Committed to fighting back against the influence of big money in Washington, Representative John Sarbanes of Maryland introduced the Government By the People Act to promote citizen-led, grassroots-funded campaigns and empower citizens to fight back against the influence of big money in politics.

The Government By the People Act establishes a new paradigm to fund congressional campaigns by broadening citizen participation and liberating candidates from their dependency on PACs and other big money interests.

The act has three pillars to raise the voices of everyday people in our political process:

1. Empower Americans to Participate
Provide everyday Americans with a refundable My Voice tax credit to help spur small-dollar contributions to candidates for congressional office.

2. Amplify the Voice of the People
Establish a Freedom from Influence Fund to multiply the impact of small-dollar donations.

3. Fight Back Against Big Money Special Interests
Prevent super-PACs and dark money interests from drowning out the voice of everyday Americans.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Provided needed knowledge of health care reform as an expert who spent years practicing health care law
  • Proposed a bill that forgave student loan debt for those pursuing nonprofit work or government employment
  • Sponsored a bill that provided grant money for K-12 programs willing to teach environmental education

Why We Like Him: Sarbanes puts his commitment to open discussions with constituents into practice through his online radio show.

Candidate Quote:  “I still hear every day that the economy isn’t working like it should for most Americans. We have to do whatever it takes to ensure the recovery reaches ordinary Americans who are out of work and looking for a job.”
