Chellie Pingree

“Pingree can work hard. Give her any job — chopping wood, planting a garden, canning vegetables, raising children, rewriting the U.S. Farm Bill.”

With that, Maine Magazine captured what makes Chellie Pingree a unique U.S. Representative. Pingree’s experience in advocacy, environmentalism, farming, small business and parenting have always been reflected in her work supporting progressive issues in Congress.

Her current priorities include opposing TPP, ensuring victims of military sexual trauma get the benefits they deserve, fighting anti-abortion bills in the House, opposing legislation that would block GMO labeling and working to have the monarch butterfly listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Supported labor unions by voting to allow workers to sue their employers and to limit mandatory overtime
  • Favored an increase in the minimum wage as well as universal health care coverage for all, the importation of prescription drugs and the expansion of drug coverage for Medicare
  • Favored a decrease in defense spending while pushing to increase funding in education, the environment, medical research and public health services
  • Voted to decrease the tax burden on working families

Why We Like Her:  From 2003 to 2006, she led Common Cause, where she advocated for issues including mandatory voter-verified paper ballots, public financing of congressional elections and an independent ethics commission for Congress. After Common Cause, she became the first Democratic woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maine.

Candidate Quote:  “It is critical that we return our country to a thriving and functioning democracy, and fighting for that requires eternal vigilance.”
