Steve Bullock

He has always been on the frontlines fighting for campaign finance reform, and now Governor Steve Bullock has won another battle against the “dark money” pouring into Montana after Citizens United.

In April 2015, Bullock successfully ushered a bill through the Montana legislature that requires “dark money” groups to report how they are spending money in state races.

While it’s expected that the law will end up being challenged before the U.S. Supreme Court, Bullock has once again taken the national lead in the ongoing fight for campaign finance reform that has defined his career.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Led other attorneys general in opposition to Citizens United
  • Fought to raise the minimum wage
  • Refused to sign a friend-of-the court brief against the 2010 Affordable Care Act
  • Vows to veto any right-to-work bill

Why We Like Him: Bullock led 26 states in submitting a brief to the Supreme Court in Citizens United that supported the federal law restricting corporate spending. Montana was the only state not to abandon its own corporate spending regulations in the wake of that that decision.

Candidate Quote:  “I dove down deep early on when the first challenge came into the case,” Bullock said about his fight against an out-of-state challenge of Montana’s century-old Corrupt Practices Act, following the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. “I’ve been working with my sleeves rolled up ever since on it.”
