“I envision a Michigan that is economically diversified and competitive in the global marketplace thanks to a citizenry standing up and having the foresight to make smart investments in human capital. No family loses its home, and no community is neglected.”
Andy Meisner has been a progressive leader in the Michigan state legislature for three terms. His bold leadership has yielded positive results and gained him respect in the Michigan House of Representatives and earned him the “Rising Star” award from 21st Century Democrats in 2005. As County Treasurer Andy will continue to stand up for the hard working people of Oakland County by promoting a progressive agenda. In a time when politicians seem to be working only for themselves, Andy stands out as a true representative of the people. Once he is elected County Treasurer, Oakland County residents will know that someone is working hard to solve pressing issues such as the long-ignored problem of housing foreclosures. Andy’s inspiring work ethic and substantial experience will lead Michigan’s politics in a positive, progressive direction. In the legislature Andy has served on the committees of House Tax Policy, New Economy, and Quality of Life. He has championed state investment in job creation and small business development, and has promoted or authored legislation to lower “pop-up” property taxes, fight foreclosures and create the 21st Century Jobs Fund and the Michigan Spirit of Entrepreneurship Initiative. The Small Business Foundation of Michigan has said that “Representative Meisner’s leadership on entrepreneurship is one of the most promising things to come out of government in a long, long time.”Today the most pressing issue for Oakland County is the foreclosure crunch that is leaving countless Americans without homes. By April, Oakland County had 3326 foreclosures in 2008, and the current County Treasurer has done little to mitigate the problem. This unfortunate inaction led Andy to run for Treasurer to help Oakland County citizens remain in their homes.
When foreclosures reached 949 in January of this year, Andy pressed the legislature into action. As Commerce Committee Chair, Andy supported a series of bills that allows people with adjustable rate mortgages to refinance to a fixed thirty-year mortgage through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. He also has called on the current County Treasurer to start a land bank authority to return tax-reverted properties to productive use. In reference to the current leadership, Andy believes that we need a leader who will get out there before a problem happens, rather than just to react to it.
We are endorsing Andy because he has demonstrated bold leadership in the legislature and because he asks the question that every representative should ask: “If there is more that can be done, why aren’t we doing it?” Andy’s immediate action on the foreclosure issue will be the first of many progressive initiatives to help the people of Oakland County.
