David Mejias

“My vision for America is one with a government that is responsive to the needs of the constituents above all others.”

Twenty-First Century Democrats is pleased to endorse Dave Mejias, as County Legislator for the 14th District of Nassau County.

He believes restoring the people’s faith in government is a key component in re-establishing public engagement. Dave Mejias takes a stand for things he believes in, even if they are unpopular. In his first year as County Legislator, Dave took the unpopular stand against a proposed salary increase for County Legislators. He knew he could never in good conscience raise his own salary while there were people in his district struggling to choose between eating and paying the rent each day. The measure was successfully defeated the day Dave put the people of his district before himself. That was only one small measure toward restoring the people’s confidence in government, Dave has bigger plans for Nassau County.

Dave believes one of the biggest problems in America is minimal engagement in the political process and that is why he is a strong supporter of same-day voter registration. Same-day voter registration would allow any citizen who is eligible to vote to register and vote on Election Day. He believes by enfranchising those who are least likely to vote – the poor, youth, and minorities – that we can make huge strides towards lifting the voices of those who are least heard.

But Dave is not only working to clean up the government, he wants to clean up our environment as well. He believes we are facing a huge energy crisis in this nation that is affecting almost every aspect of American life – from international diplomacy and the domestic economy to irreversible damage sustained by our environment as a result of the abuse of natural resources. That’s why he believes we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil by raising the federal corporate average fuel economy (C.A.F.E.) standards to a minimum of 50 mpg. “We currently have the technology to drastically reduce our dependence on oil for daily transportation, but our current leaders are unwilling to take the bold steps necessary to achieve energy independence.” Dave Mejias is ready for that challenge.

As a first generation American, and son of two Hispanic immigrants, Dave understands hard work. By age 26, Dave had already graduated from Fordham Law and opened his own practice where he still fights on the behalf of battered women. Dave was raised with the values of dedication and commitment and is living proof that the American dream is available, not only to those wealthy and fortunate enough to attain it, but to all those with the will and determination to achieve it.
