“I believe that true community service means a personal commitment of time and energy and when I make a commitment, I follow it through to the end.”
Gabrielle Giffords ran for Congress in 2006 because she felt Washington was too beholden to special interests and not responsive to average Arizonans. She envisioned an America more focused on the well-being of the community as a whole with all its people actively engaged in their communities. She knows that the next generation of leaders must address serious issues of inequality, hunger, AIDS, nuclear proliferation and human rights, but also that these issues cannot be solved without strong leadership and a willingness to build bridges with all sides.
The people of Southern Arizonans sent Representative Giffords to Congress to speak for them and she has not let them down. She has refused engage in partisan political battles, choosing instead to focus on the issues that matter most to residents of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. She was able to save 200 quality jobs at the Air National Guard base in Tucson and has worked with an array of constituencies and interest groups to deal with concerns about immigration across the US-Mexico border. Representative Giffords is convinced that every child in America must have access to high-quality early childhood education and is committed to moving forward on a national health care strategy that would cover all Americans, modeled after the Veterans Health Administration.
In an attempt to improve economic conditions in Southern Arizona and help solve our country’s energy crisis, Representative Giffords has been a consistent advocate for increased investment in alternative energy. She recently sponsored the Solar Energy Research and Advancement Act of 2007 – a four point plan to promote solar power and move America toward energy independence – but she knows that it is only a small piece of the solution. Representative Giffords strongly believes that America must launch an Apollo-type program focused on renewable energy.
21st Century Democrats was proud to endorse Representative Giffords in 2006 and to work with her campaign again this year. Her track record in Congress clearly demonstrates that she is a representative for the people of Arizona and not special interests. She has worked diligently to protect our environment, provide economic opportunities for all Americans and make America energy independent in the 21st Century. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is clearly the best choice for the people of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.
