Why We Like Her: As the next U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, Governor Shaheen will make our government work for the people again. She will put an end to tax breaks for the big oil companies and instead invest in clean alternative energy to protect our natural environment. She will stand up to the insurance companies and help expand health insurance coverage to all Americans. She will fight to end pork-barrel spending and no-bid contracts. Gov. Shaheen has pledged to put middle class America before corporate America and will work to bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq and bring our troops home.
Governor Shaheen has worked determinedly to serve the people of New Hampshire throughout her career, first as a high school teacher, later as a State Senator and then as the state’s first woman Governor. As Governor, Shaheen put the needs of the people, not special interests, first. She gained new protections for people insured through health maintenance organization. She took on the utility companies and lowered electric rates. She also expanded health insurance coverage to nearly 20,000 children who had none. Governor Shaheen opened the door to college for thousands of New Hampshire students by investing in higher education and helping their families save for tuition. She led the effort to raise standards for teachers and made public kindergarten available to more than 16,000 additional children.
As a champion for the environment, Governor Shaheen enacted a first-in-the-nation law limiting four pollutants that cause global warming. Under her leadership, New Hampshire created the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program to help communities preserve the state’s open spaces and historic places.
Governor Shaheen also signed historic civil rights legislation, including sexual orientation in the state’s anti discrimination laws, allowing gays and lesbians to become foster and adoptive parents, and establishing a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – ending the state’s embarrassing status as the only state in the nation not to recognize Dr. King’s birthday as an official holiday. She also increased protections for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
21st Century Democrats knows that once elected to U.S. Senate, Jeanne Shaheen will fight for better education, good paying jobs, quality health care and higher environmental standards for America. We are honored to be working with such an exceptional leader and we look forward to the change she will bring to Washington.
