“Doing what is best for my constituents and the general public, versus the politically expedient choice, has always been at the center of my thought process.”
Michigan State Senator Mark Schauer’s top priority is making America’s government work for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected. Born in Howell, Michigan to a nurse and public school teacher, Senator Schauer learned from an early age the importance of community and serving the greater good. These family values are at the heart of his governing philosophy and what he’ll bring to Congress as the next Representative from Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.
After graduating from Albion College, Senator Schauer became a community organizer, serving as Executive Director of the Community Action Network of South Central Michigan and as a coordinator for the Calhoun County Community Services Coordinating Council. In these roles Schauer fought for programs that served those struggling to make ends meet. In 1996 Mark took his commitment to community service to Lansing as a member of the Michigan State House.
While in the legislature, Senator Schauer has been a strong voice for all Michiganders. Reinforcing his work as a community organizer, he has continued to be an advocate for quality education, affordable healthcare, and economic development. Elected to the Michigan Senate in 2002, Senator Schauer was eventually elected Minority Leader by his Democratic colleagues. He has worked tirelessly in this role to push legislation to help improve the lives of working families even with the numbers stacked against him.
Once elected to the US Congress, Senator Schauer will bring his progressive agenda to Congress and help fix our nation’s most pressing problems. He is a strong critic of the Bush Administration’s expensive and directionless foreign policy, particularly the Iraq War. Once in Washington, Senator Schauer will be at the heart of our nation’s healthcare debate and fight for the millions of Americans who are uninsured and underinsured. Recognizing that we need a trade policy which respects economic growth, workers collective bargaining rights, the environment, and keeping jobs in America, Senator Schauer will pursue legislation to build a stronger and fairer economy.
21st Century Democrats is thrilled to endorse a candidate whose work embodies the values for which our organization stands. Senator Schauer is actively improving the lives of Americans through hands on organizing and a commitment to strong progressive ideals. From his experience as a community organizer to his service in the Michigan Legislature, Mark Schauer has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to creating an America which works for everyone. We are pleased to endorse such a dynamic leader.
