Summer Starr
2008
State House12th District Hawaii Undecided
"I feel that now is the time to make my voice heard, because it is the voice of so many. It is the voice of my generation. It is the voice of our future, and it is the voice that respects and loves the past of my district on Maui, which we must protect from being lost forever."
Summer Starr knows that now, more than ever, the direction of our nation must change. This is why she is running to represent the 12th District of Hawaii's State House. As a native of Hawaii, Starr graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa with a Bachelor's Degree in "Protecting Hawaii's Environment." Today, she is currently pursuing a Masters' Degree in Political Science, Sustainable Development, and Indigenous Politics. In the past, she has developed and led environmental and political groups, and worked in the Public Access Office at the State Capitol, a free service established solely to assist the public with understanding the legislative process.
With a passion for politics, the environment, and progressive values, as a State Legislator, Summer will justly represent Hawaiians and make decisions on behalf of their well-being. She strongly believes that the goal of the government must be to give children a healthier world so that they can flourish in a safe environment. She will work tirelessly for this cause.
In office, Summer will empower the local and greater Hawaiian community by providing them access to better education. Because Summer values her roots, she seeks to enhance inadequate immersion programs currently in place to revitalize Hawaiian language and culture. She believes that such programs are understaffed and under appreciated and must be improved to effectively teach children about their heritage in order to foster a greater sense of community. Also a strong advocate for the environment, Summer believes that because the environment sustains us, environment issues are issues of human rights and must be addressed as a top priority.
Balance is the key to progress in Summer's vision. She seeks smart growth, which incorporates environmental accountability, cultural sensitivity and affordable housing. Summer advocates for a thriving agricultural community, thrusting Upcountry into being the new 'breadbasket' of Maui. She knows that creative solutions can be found to alleviate pressure on water management and longs for the day when a wide variety of renewable energy possibilities bring Hawaii closer to self-sufficiency. In addition, Summer looks for job opportunities for our youth in clean technology that would not only provide sufficient jobs and beneficial research, but would foster enhanced education.
Summer's dedication to improving her community is evident in everything she does. She is truly working for the people. 21st Century Democrats is happy to endorse Summer Starr, a candidate who strongly believes in equality and fairness for the people, the land, and future generations.
