Twenty-First Century Democrats is pleased to announce its endorsement of Tom Bullock.

Tom is seeking election to the Lakewood City Council, Ward 2 to bring fresh leadership that responds to the issues of Lakewood’s citizens. He exhibits the qualities of a great leader – talent, a willingness to work hard, and optimism. What’s more, Tom’s own hopes for his citizens reflect some of his best features: respect for others, self-knowledge, and self-responsibility. This is not a candidate who is interested in power for power’s sake – in leaping into the untested waters of politics, Tom is taking a risk for his beliefs, and we at Twenty-First Century Democrats applaud his initiative and look forward to his success.

As a resident of Lakewood, Tom is very well-placed to understand the needs of the city, and also to recognize its potential. For example, he sees Lakewood, with its active and diverse citizenry, as the perfect place to develop what he calls “new urbanism” – safe, clean and family friendly communities. Similarly, he also plans to support the fair trade movement, thereby empowering the consumers and allowing them to make an impact in an innovative way. Tom is passionate about the environment and envisions plans to restore the natural environment on both a local level within the city and a national scale. He is active within his community and will pursue the same level of engagement with the city’s people when elected to office.

He is a dreamer and a doer, cherishing hopes for a better future for all, and ready to roll up his sleeves to achieve this goal Tom does not shy away from difficult decisions and in terms of his personal development, works constantly to be courageous and generous, but also to recognize and tackle his own limitations – an all-too rare trait in many of our politicians. Tom’s motivation for seeking elected office also comes from a promise he made to himself years ago, at the time when he was just beginning to cultivate a political and social conscience. He vowed never to ignore the trials and tribulations faced by the weak and defenseless after learning about human rights abuses in El Salvador. He was equally inspired by the great reform leaders of the 1960s and we believe that Tom is more than capable of building on their legacy.
