“I envision a nation that does not engage in senseless unprovoked wars and military adventure around the globe. A nation that prioritizes the needs of its citizens ahead of those of corporate interests and the wealthiest in our society. A nation that understands the greatest resource we have is our people and that we must educate and train them to be successful in this complex world”
Raul Martinez came to America in search of a better life, but instead he found a city in despair, where people largely being ignored and underserved. This wasn’t the America he believed in and he refused to accept the status quo. As a result of the poor conditions of Hialeah, Martinez ran for mayor to improve the lives of the people around him. His vision was inspiring and he was elected as the first Cuban-American mayor of any major city.
During his 24 year tenure as mayor, Martinez had a clear vision of what he wanted to do to help his city. He was able to provide seniors with over 300 units of affordable housing where they could live and also provide them with three meals a day. He was also able to provide centers to the seniors in Hialeah where they could have places to eat and a place to participate in activities. Under his leadership, the City of Hialeah was named one of the best run cities in America for several years.
Martinez is ready to take on tough challenges. During his time as Mayor he faced a serious budget crisis, but through good judgment and fiscal responsibility he was able to continue Hialeah ’s progress. When times got tough and important infrastructure projects critical to the city’s growth were in jeopardy, Martinez rose to the challenge. He allocated additional revenues to continue the projects, and balanced the budget. Martinez has a record of more than two decades of prosperity and sustainable growth, which earned Hialeah the slogan “The City of Progress.” As a result, he was re-elected eight times and left office with very high approval ratings.
As the next Congressman from Florida’s 21st Congressional District, Martinez will continue to promote affordable housing, fight for universal health care and work to make America a nation that leads by example and is a symbol of freedom around the world. 21st Century Democrats is proud to endorse Raul Martinez as he fights to better the lives of people of south Florida.
