Race Outcome: Won

Fresh off of leading 26 states in the fight against Citizens United, Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock faces GOP Representative Rick Hill in the state’s gubernatorial race.

At the center of another key fight, Bullock stood up to national and home-state pressure and refused to sign a friend-of-the court brief opposing the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

Among the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country, Bullock has a slim lead a month out from the election. But supporters remain optimistic, pointing to Bullock’s more comfortable lead in the polls when it comes to personal favorability ratings.

Progressive Credentials:

  • Led other attorneys general in opposition to Citizens United
  • Fought to raise minimum wage
  • Refused to sign a friend-of-the court brief against the 2010 Affordable Care Act
  • Vows to veto any right-to-work bill if he is governor

Why We Like Him
: Bullock led 26 states in submitting a brief to the Supreme Court in Citizens United that supported the federal law restricting such corporate spending. Montana was the only state not to abandon its own corporate spending regulations in the wake of that that decision.

Candidate Quote:  “I dove down deep early on when the first challenge came into the case,” Bullock said about his fight against an out-of-state challenge of Montana’s century-old Corrupt Practices Act following the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. “I’ve been working with my sleeves rolled up ever since on it.”
