Why We Like Her: In a district treading more Democratic, Suzanne Kosmas brings the experience and change that voters of Florida’s 24th Congressional District are yearning for. In her 8 years in Florida’s House of Representatives, she made positive progress on issues related to children and seniors. In her more than 30 years as a community activist, she has been the kind of leader who cares about finding solutions not getting credit or scoring points.
Her success as a businesswoman and community leader positioned Suzanne well for her work in the legislature, where she fought hard for more money for schools and to expand health care for children. She is dedicated to ensuring that every citizen has better medical coverage. In her first term in Florida’s House, she persuaded the state to open up $700,000 in Medicaid funds for heart transplants, previously not covered for those over the age of 21. In 2003, Suzanne saw the plight of Floridians hit by catastrophic illnesses and was motivated to act. She fought successfully to extend the Medically Needy program, breaking gridlock between the House and Senate over this necessary program.
While some politicians put their personal interests above the common good, Suzanne has a steady moral compass. In addition to supporting strong ethical standards for elected officials, she has even championed smart growth legislation that could be contrary to her personal interests as a real estate developer.
Upon election to Congress, Suzanne will work to change the toxic atmosphere ofWashington by reaching across party lines to get her priorities accomplished. She will work to build consensus around the important goals of providing health care to all Americans, improving our nation’s educational system and balancing the budget. In addition, protecting Social Security, changing direction in Iraq and making America energy independent will be top priorities for Suzanne.
America must retain our leadership position in space exploration and manned space flight. Suzanne will always fight to ensure that the Kennedy Space Center is given what it needs to remain strong and continue its spirit of exploration and excellence, and she will work to fully fund NASA’s requests in our national budget. Finally, Suzanne is dedicated to making the transition from Space Shuttle Program to the Constellation Program as safe and seamless as possible, addressing the needs of our talented shuttle workers.
Suzanne brings leadership to important progressive issues and a consistent level of integrity to the office. Her past performance as a legislator gives us great confidence that she will pursue the interests of her constituents above personal gain. It is because of Suzanne’s dedication to a new direction in Washington that 21st Century Democrats proudly endorses her candidacy for Florida’s 24th Congressional District.
