AN UPSET FOR DEMOCRATS IN SOUTH CAROLINA’S STATE HOUSE

Washington, DC – Twenty-First Century Democrats is disheartened by Anton Gunn’s loss in South Carolina’s 79th state house district. Gunn was one of 34 candidates endorsed by Twenty-First Century Democrats, the nation’s 13th largest political action committee, during the 2006 election cycle.

“We are proud to have supported Anton Gunn this election season,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Although Anton did not win today, we know that he will continue to fight for progressive ideals and motivate people to action in his community. Gunn has a bright future in politics, and we look forward to working with him again on his next endeavor.”

Although South Carolina’s 79th state house district has typically been a Republican safe seat, Gunn was extremely prepared to challenge incumbent Republican Bill Cotty. Anton’s race was an uphill battle, but he refused to sacrifice his progressive beliefs just to win over the conservative votes in the district.

The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “We are bringing the Democratic Party back to the people, and we’re making it a party of movement again,” said Young. “We need strong risk-takers to once again stand up for what they believe in, share their vision with America, and motivate millions of citizens to become active in their communities. Anton Gunn is the type of leader who can generate bold ideas that cross ideological lines, express our values, and solve problems that are facing our world today.”
