Washington, DC – Reacting to the news that Debra Bowen has defeated incumbent Republican Bruce McPherson in California’s Secretary of State race, Twenty-First Century Democrats called the outcome, “a significant step forward for progressive ideals and values.” During the 2006 election cycle, Twenty-First Century Democrats endorsed 34 candidates, including Bowen, all chosen due to their extraordinary leadership abilities.
“Debra Bowen was an essential part of our team this election season,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Debra is an effective leader and advocate for equal rights, privacy protections, and an open government. She believes that trustworthiness is the most important quality for a political candidate to possess. Debra will use the trust she earns to take huge steps forward for America.”
The race between Bowen and incumbent Republican Bruce McPherson was highly contested from the start. McPherson’s lack of the typical “incumbent advantage” combined with Bowen’s successful grassroots campaign both contributed to Bowen’s win in California. As Secretary of State, Bowen will continue to be a voice for campaign finance reform and open government. She also plans to make consumer privacy, environmental protection, and equality in the workplace and government a priority while in office.
“Debra’s win today signals a tremendous step forward for voting rights and increased access to voting – not only in California, but nationwide,” said Young. “California is a national leader in most everything it does, and now it will be a leader in breaking down barriers to voting and improving the most cherished function of our democracy.”
The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “In order to achieve substantive changes in public policy, we need to elect Democrats who will actively support our progressive ideals,” said Young. “Our elected officials need to reach out to America, inspire, and motivate millions of citizens to become involved in their communities. Debra Bowen is the type of leader who can compel Californians to become active in our democracy once again.”
