SHERROD BROWN ELECTED US SENATOR IN OHIO

Washington, DC – Reacting to the news that Sherrod Brown has defeated incumbent Mike DeWine and has won the US Senate seat in Ohio, Twenty-First Century Democrats called the outcome, “a significant step forward for progressive ideals and values.” During the 2006 election cycle, Twenty-First Century Democrats endorsed 34 candidates, including Brown, all chosen due to their extraordinary leadership abilities.

“Sherrod Brown was an essential part of our team this election season,” said Kelly C. Young, president of Twenty-First Century Democrats. “Throughout his career, he has fought against special interests and their stronghold in Washington. Sherrod will be the voice for middle-class America in the Senate. He is truly a genuine person – one who stands up for his beliefs and for the rights of ordinary citizens in Ohio.”

Throughout this extremely competitive race, Brown and incumbent US Senator Mike DeWine traded leads in the polls. Sherrod Brown’s successful campaign for the senate seat against DeWine is a step forward for Ohioans. As US Senator, Sherrod will fight to return the power back into the hands of the hard-working citizens of the state in the areas of education, health care, the economy, environment, and homeland security. His time in office will be spent investing in families and communities, as opposed to special interests in Washington.

“So far tonight, we’re two-for-two in Ohio,” said Young. “It’s becoming all the more clear that Ohioans were ready for a change, and they’ve chosen an authentic, bold leader in their US Senate race.”

The endorsement of such a small number of candidates nationwide signals a new direction for Twenty-First Century Democrats. “In order to achieve substantive changes in public policy, we need to elect Democrats who will actively support our progressive ideals,” said Young. “Our elected officials need to reach out to America, inspire, and motivate millions of citizens to become involved in their communities. Sherrod Brown is the type of leader who can compel Ohioans to become active in our democracy once again.”
