Senator Shaheen is committed to fighting for better education, good-paying jobs and higher environmental standards for America.
Progressive Credentials: As Governor of New Hampshire, Senator Shaheen signed historic civil rights legislation and anti-discrimination laws, allowing gays and lesbians to become foster and adoptive parents. She established a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, ending the state’s embarrassing status as the only state in the nation not to recognize Dr. King’s birthday as an official holiday. She also increased protections for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
As Senator, she championed history-making legislation known as the Shaheen Amendment, which provides health insurance coverage for abortion for women serving in the military who are victims of rape or incest. She has been outspoken in the fight to stop sexual assault in the military and was a leader in the effort to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.
She is cosponsoring legislation to stop employers from forcing pregnant women out of the workplace or denying them reasonable accommodations so they can continue working.
She is a cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act and cosponsored the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. And she has introduced legislation to expand the childcare tax credit to help working families cope with the rising cost of child care. And Jeanne is a co-sponsor of legislation to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision in the Hobby Lobby case, legislation that will protect women’s rights to birth control and contraception.
Why We Like Her: Jeanne Shaheen is the only woman in American history to be elected Governor and U.S. Senator. She stood up to the insurance companies and helped expand health insurance coverage to all Americans. She will fight to end pork-barrel spending and no-bid contracts. Senator Shaheen has pledged to put middle-class America before corporate America, and she worked to bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq and bring our troops home.
